Our Story
1. History and Background
The Bangladesh Association for Greater Kansas City (BAGKC), formerly Bangladesh Association of Greater Kansas City (BAGKC), is a nonprofit, non-political, and non-religious community organization established in 1983 to serve the Bangladeshi American community in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. The organization was originally incorporated in the State of Missouri and later transferred its registration to the State of Kansas as the community expanded across both states.
Like Bangladeshis living throughout the United States, the early members of BAGKC remained deeply connected to the culture, history, heritage, traditions, and social values of their homeland. Although they had physically left Bangladesh, they continued to cherish and uphold these values and recognized the importance of creating a community where Bangladeshis could come together, maintain their cultural identity, and support one another.
With this vision in mind, a few enthusiastic Bangladeshis in the Greater Kansas City area came together in the early 1980s to establish BAGKC and bring Bangladeshis together under one umbrella. What began as a small association serving only a few Bangladeshi families has grown over the decades into an established community organization with more than two hundred paid members, while continuing to welcome Bangladeshi families, students, and individuals throughout the Greater Kansas City area.
For more than four decades, BAGKC has been dedicated to preserving and promoting the language, culture, traditions, and heritage of Bangladesh while fostering friendship, volunteerism, civic engagement, and community service. Through cultural celebrations, educational initiatives, charitable programs, and family-oriented activities, BAGKC has helped strengthen the Bangladeshi American community and provide opportunities for multiple generations to remain connected to their heritage.
An important part of BAGKC's mission is engaging the younger generation and helping children and youth develop a meaningful connection with Bangladesh's culture, traditions, heritage, and social and religious values. Through community programs and activities, BAGKC encourages younger generations to learn about, appreciate, preserve, and practice these values in their daily lives.
BAGKC has also been an active member organization of the Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America (FOBANA) for many years and has consistently supported FOBANA's mission of promoting Bangladeshi culture, heritage, and community engagement throughout North America.
2. Mission
The mission of BAGKC is to preserve, promote, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Bangladesh while strengthening the Bangladeshi American community through educational, cultural, charitable, and social programs.
The Association encourages volunteerism, youth engagement, leadership development, and community collaboration while fostering understanding and appreciation of Bangladeshi culture within the multicultural community of Greater Kansas City.
BAGKC seeks to provide an inclusive environment where Bangladeshis of all ages and backgrounds can build friendships, celebrate their heritage, contribute to the community, and help ensure that Bangladesh's rich cultural traditions continue to thrive for future generations.
3. Community Service and Cultural Activities
Since its founding in 1983, BAGKC has organized a year-round calendar of cultural, educational, charitable, and social programs that preserve Bangladeshi heritage while strengthening the Bangladeshi American community in Greater Kansas City.
These programs are planned and carried out primarily by volunteers and provide opportunities for children, youth, adults, and senior citizens to participate as performers, volunteers, organizers, and community leaders.
Over the years, BAGKC has organized cultural programs featuring local talent as well as professional performers from outside the community. Its activities have included music and dance programs, sports events, games, art and essay competitions for children, picnics, traditional food celebrations, religious and cultural gatherings, and other family-oriented activities.
4. Community Service and Charitable Initiatives
Beyond cultural programming, BAGKC is committed to serving the broader community through charitable and humanitarian initiatives. The Association encourages volunteerism and collaborates with local organizations whenever possible to support individuals and families in need.
Examples include:
- Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway benefiting local families.
- Community fundraising and charitable assistance initiatives.
- Support for newly arrived Bangladeshi families and students.
- Volunteer-driven programs encouraging civic engagement and social responsibility.
- Collaboration with local community organizations on humanitarian efforts.
These initiatives reflect BAGKC's belief that a community organization should not only preserve its own cultural heritage but also contribute positively to the wider communities in which its members live.
5. Community Engagement
Community participation is the foundation of BAGKC's success. Every major program depends on the time, dedication, and volunteer efforts of community members.
BAGKC strives to provide programs that are inclusive, family-oriented, and accessible to the broader Bangladeshi community. Children, youth, adults, and seniors are encouraged to participate in various capacities—as performers, volunteers, organizers, supporters, and community leaders.
This multigenerational participation helps create a strong sense of belonging and ensures continuity of the community's cultural traditions.
BAGKC also seeks to expand its membership and reach all Bangladeshis living in the Greater Kansas City area, including families, students, and individuals. Through increased participation and volunteerism, the Association aims to build an even stronger and more connected community.
The Association maintains democratic governance through member participation, regular Annual General Meetings, elections, and an organizational structure designed to promote transparency, accountability, and continuity.
6. Organizational Development and Achievements
Over its 43-year history, BAGKC has evolved from a small association serving a limited number of Bangladeshi families into an established community organization serving a growing and increasingly diverse Bangladeshi American population across the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area.
Notable achievements include:
- Serving the Greater Kansas City community continuously since 1983.
- Preserving and promoting Bangladeshi culture, language, traditions, and heritage across multiple generations.
- Organizing year-round cultural, educational, social, charitable, and family-oriented programs.
- Providing opportunities for children and youth to learn about and participate in Bangladeshi cultural traditions.
- Promoting volunteerism, community service, and leadership development.
- Expanding membership to include Bangladeshi families, students, and individuals throughout the Greater Kansas City area.
- Successfully adopting a modern Board of Directors governance structure through unanimous member approval in 2026.
- Conducting the 2026 Annual General Meeting and election, resulting in the election of a Board of Directors for the 2026–2028 term.
- Maintaining an active relationship with FOBANA and supporting its mission of promoting Bangladeshi culture, heritage, and community engagement throughout North America.
- Receiving the 2026 FOBANA Best Member Organization Award, recognizing BAGKC's contributions and commitment to the Bangladeshi community and FOBANA.
7. Looking Ahead
As BAGKC moves forward, its focus remains on building upon more than four decades of community service while responding to the evolving needs of the Bangladeshi American community in Greater Kansas City.
The Association will continue to promote Bangladeshi culture and heritage, expand community participation, encourage volunteerism and youth leadership, support charitable initiatives, and create opportunities for families and individuals to connect with one another.
Most importantly, BAGKC will continue working to ensure that the younger generation understands and appreciates its Bangladeshi heritage and remains connected to the traditions, values, and cultural identity of Bangladesh.
From a small group of Bangladeshi families in the early 1980s to a growing community today, BAGKC's history is a story of community, volunteerism, cultural pride, friendship, and service. Its continuing strength rests on the dedication of its members, volunteers, past leaders, supporters, and community partners who have contributed to its growth and success over the past four decades.
BAGKC looks forward to carrying this legacy forward and serving the Bangladeshi American community of Greater Kansas City for generations to come.

Classes of Membership
- GENERAL MEMBER: Shall include all registered members. Family $35, Single $20
- STUDENT MEMBER: Shall include all students enrolled in the State of Kansas and Missouri. $10
- PERMANENT MEMBER: Shall include members who have donated at least USD 300 to the association. Permanent members will be members for life and shall not be required to pay yearly membership dues.
- HONORARY MEMBER: Shall include all others designated such by the executive committee. Honorary members cannot vote or run for office.
